Wiltshire VILLAGES have gone one step further to be named one of Wiltshire’s best-kept as the results of the first round of judging are announced.
The CPRE Wiltshire and The Hills Group Best Kept Village competition kicked off this year with 28 villages judged in the small, medium and large categories.
They were put under the microscope by a team of expert judges who look for criteria such as order, cleanliness, presentation and community spirit of the village.
One village, Castle Eaton, has already won a cash prize of £ 150 after being named this year’s best newcomer.
Mike Manson, CPRE Wiltshire, said: âThe parish councils and their volunteers have clearly worked hard, reaching encouraging standards and making the job of judges even more difficult.
“This competition could not have happened without the very generous contributions from our sponsors, The Hills Group and Princeton Homes, the support of the Wiltshire Council and the immense hard work provided by the individual parish councils and the villagers.”
Each village is judged within its own district in the first round and the winners will each receive a certificate.
In July, they will be judged against similarly sized villages in other districts to determine the best kept in Wiltshire.
Also in July, the Laurence Kitching Prize will be awarded. These are the six villages that won their size categories in the last two competitions in 2018 and 2019 and are therefore ineligible for the main competition. The results of the second round will be published in August.
The President of CPRE Wiltshire, the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton, will present the prizes on Sunday 26 September to the three big winners. Cash prizes between £ 30 and £ 200 will be awarded to all villages in the second round.
