What started with a single guitar teacher working from his own home has grown into a music academy with 20 teachers offering lessons on 12 instruments. Director James Flood opened Westlake Music Academy in April 2019, transferring 40 students from his old home business. Today, just over two years later, WMA now has 325 students.

“I had taught guitar in various places: colleges, music schools and at home,” Flood recalls. Locations. Starting a full-service music school was something that had never occurred to me before. ‘mind until I joined a Facebook group and started talking to music school owners. In 2017, the guy who ran the group persuaded me to attend a conference. I left that conference. absolutely convinced that I was going to start music school, and I never looked back.

Flood initially only rented the front portion of the building at the southwest corner of Detroit and Canterbury. In May, WMA went from an initial 1,100 square foot space to use of the entire 2,850 square foot building, almost tripling in size. The renovations resulted in three new studios, including a 400 square foot studio for classes and small recitals. Future plans include adding more studios.

“I really think what’s unique about Westlake Music Academy is our emphasis on quality. I do not allow a teacher to teach an instrument unless he has devoted years of serious study to it. All of our teachers have at least a bachelor’s degree in the instrument they teach, the majority having a master’s degree.

WMA offers lessons in piano, guitar, vocals, violin, viola, cello, double bass, drums, electric bass, ukulele, flute and saxophone. Classes are available for children and adults.
