TROY and American Village Deal Aims to Strengthen Awareness of U.S. History and Government – Shelby County Reporter

Troy University and the American Village Citizenship Trust are partnering to help young people in Alabama deepen their knowledge and understanding of United States history, the function of government, and the role of the citizen in the government process.

A memorandum of understanding was signed Thursday by the two institutions at Montgomery, creating a young leaders program designed to educate students about the founding and history of the United States; the structure of federal, state and local government; and the elements of good citizenship and statesmanship. The program will target middle school and high school seniors and will be administered by TROY’s Institute for Civic and Global Leadership. Participants will receive three hours credit for TROY’s Leadership 1100 course by passing a challenge exam.

Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, said the agreement brought together two like-minded institutions.

“We believe in the mission and direction of the American Village, but we also know that the values of the Village and the values of the University of Troy are congruent,” Dr. Hawkins said. “We belong to a strong military, we believe in the power of faith, we believe in good citizenship and civility, and we believe in all those things that we believe have made America great. That’s what the Village stands for, and we want to partner with the Village to help bring that understanding to the youth of Alabama.

A civics microcredit will be developed for teachers who teach middle or high school civics, U.S. national government, U.S. history, and/or those who prepare students to take the exam civics for high school graduation.

As part of the agreement, American Village and TROY will develop and market a test and support program to help Alabama public schools meet state-level civic and governmental requirements for graduation. of high school. Additionally, online and hybrid program delivery options will be facilitated by ACCESS (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide).

The agreement also provides for the creation of additional educational materials on US history, also supported by ACCESS, and will create an American Village-Troy University partnership advisory board.

All of these efforts will work together to help increase understanding and awareness of the principles that have made America a great nation, Dr. Hawkins said.

“We have a long way to go before the average person in this country understands the basics and fundamentals needed to function in a free and democratic society,” Hawkins said. “We are very proud at the University of Troy to partner with America Village to help Alabamians understand in a much deeper way their responsibilities in good citizenship and in knowing history and understanding what we must do to move forward, together as a nation.”

Dr. Tom Walker, Chairman Emeritus of American Village, said American Village is excited about the partnership and its potential for growth in the future.

“We are deeply grateful to Dr. Hawkins, the board, and the University of Troy for his leadership,” Walker said. “We believe these times demand that we work smart and that usually involves partnerships. We believe this is a natural partnership that we can continue to build on in the future. We believe this is an opportunity for the State of Alabama to take the lead in our country by increasing knowledge of American history and increasing civic participation and that is our goal.

American Village Board Chair Carol Brown said she believes the core elements of the partnership will have a significant impact on the state of Alabama, as well as on both institutions.

“We are excited about this new partnership with the University of Troy which has taken years to develop,” Brown said. “We hope that its essential components – youth leadership, civics and history centered on the founding of this great country – will also open other doors for educational institutions seeking similar opportunities. We look forward to working with TROY to finalize the details of this new venture.
