High school football rankings: St. John Bosco, Mater Dei remain 1-2 in this week’s MaxPreps Top 25


For the second week in a row, number 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) beat a top 10 opponent on the road. After beating No. 8 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), 24-21 on Aug. 26 with a comeback effort, the Monarchs left no doubt with an impressive 43-20 victory at No. 7 Centennial (Corona, California). ). The loss dropped the Huskies to 15th in this week’s MaxPreps Top 25 High School Football Rankings.

Junior quarterback Elijah Brown improved to 20-0 as a starting quarterback and had another big night completing 16 of 22 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns while adding another rushing score. Seven of those wins came against MaxPreps’ top 25 opponents.

The Monarchs’ next three opponents are La Mirada, Mililani (Hawaii) and JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) ahead of a huge showdown Oct. 7 against No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower).

The top-seeded Braves moved to 2-0 with a dominating 42-7 win over Bishop Amat (La Puente). Junior running back Cameron Jones rushed for 164 yards and two scores as the defense threw a shutout in the fourth quarter. St. John Bosco travels to Oregon to face Central Catholic (Portland), the state’s highest-rated team, on Sept. 9 at Autzen Stadium.
3rd St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) picked up one of the biggest wins of the week with a one-sided 47-7 victory in Texas over DeSoto. Durell Robinson rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns while four-star junior quarterback Michael Van Buren completed 12 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three scores.
In one of the weekend’s most impressive wins, Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ) moved up five spots to No. 14 on the MaxPreps Top 25 after a 28-7 road win over Saguaro (Scottsdale, Arizona) . The Crusaders showed why they have one of the best defensive lines in the country, led by four-star Texas signing Sydir Mitchell and 2023 Maryland signing DJ Samuels.

The loss knocked the Sabercats out of the national standings, making way for East St. Louis (Illinois) to become the only new team at No. 25.

The Flyers showed they can hang with the best teams in the country with a 20-13 loss to 3rd St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) on Aug. 27. They responded with a 64-19 win over Christian Brothers (St. Louis). Junior quarterback Robert Battle has six total touchdowns and the Midwest power has one of the best offensive lines led by a trio of Power 5s committed to Miles McVay (Alabama), Paris Patterson (Arkansas) and Brandon Henderson ( Iowa State).
