Donors have sought to address Red Cross blood bank shortage

The American Red Cross is holding a number of blood drives throughout North County in response to their emergency blood and platelet shortage. The nonprofit reported that blood donor participation has reached the lowest levels of the year and is the lowest post-summer blood supply since 2015.

The Red Cross must collect 10,000 more blood products each week over the next month to restore the blood supply and meet the needs of hospitals and patients, according to the association. Donors of all blood groups, especially type O, are needed.
